How to read a Carrier model number

Carrier, Bryant and the ICP brands (Heil, Tempstar, Comfortmaker, Arcoaire) all put a cabinet width code inside the model number. Width codes: 14 means 14-3/16 in., 17 means 17-1/2 in., 21 means 21 in., 24 means 24-1/2 in.

Carrier current (2009+) families: 59SC5A, 59SC6A, 59SC2E, 59TP6A, 59SU5A, 59MN7A, 59TN6A, 58SB0A, 58SC0A, 58TN0A, 58TP0A, 58CU0A, 58SU0A

Example: 59MN7A060V17--14

How to read it: Positions 1-2 = family (58 = 80% non-condensing, 59 = condensing). 3 = heating stages (S single, T two-stage, M modulating). 4 = tier (C Comfort, P Performance, N Infinity). 5 = efficiency digit (0 = 80/90 AFUE, 3 = 93, 5 = 95, 6 = 96, 7 = 97). 6 = major series letter. 7-9 = input in thousand BTU/h (060 = 60,000). 10 = motor (S standard PSC, E energy-efficient, V variable speed, M/C used on other families). 11-12 = cabinet width code (14 = 14.2 in., 17 = 17.5 in., 21 = 21.0 in., 24 = 24.5 in.). 13 = voltage, 14 = minor series (shown as '--' in literature). 15-16 = nominal max cooling airflow (08 = 800 CFM ... 22 = 2200 CFM).

How it connects to the filter: Cabinet width (positions 11-12) selects the row of the installation-manual filter table.

Carrier older families: 58STA/58STX, 58CTA/58CTX, 58CVA/58CVX, 58PAV, 58MCA, 58MCB, 58MTB, 58MVB, 58MVC, 58MVP

Example: 58STA090-16 (literature unit size '090-16'; nameplate adds series digits, e.g. Series 120)

How to read it: Family letters (e.g. 58STA) + 3-digit input code in thousand BTU/h (045, 070, 090, 110/111, 135, 155) + 2-digit nominal cooling airflow/tonnage code (08, 12, 14, 16, 20, 22 = 800...2200 CFM). The cabinet width is not in the model number; it must be read from the Product Data / installation-manual dimensions table for that unit size.

How it connects to the filter: Look up casing width (A dimension) for the unit size, then use the filter table row. Note 58MVB/58MVP size 040-14 uses the 24-1/2 in. casing.

Where this comes from: Dimensions tables: 58ST-13PD p3, 58CT-8PD p3, 58CV-10PD p3, 58PAV-9PD, 58MCA-10PD, 58MCB-6PD, 58MTB-2PD, 58MVB-3PD, 58MVC-5PD, 58MVP-11PD. Decoding of the airflow digits is inferred from the current-family nomenclature above (not stated in these older docs).

Related families from the same maker group

These share parts of the numbering system with Carrier, so they can help with an older or rebadged label.

Bryant (Legacy/Preferred/Evolution) families: 800SA, 912SC, 912SE, 915SB, 926TB, 986TB, 987MB

Example: 912SC48080S17 (literature); 986TB42060V17A--A (SAP ordering no.)

How to read it: 3-digit family (800, 912, 915, 926, 986, 987) + 2-letter series (SA, SC, TB...) + 2-digit cooling-tonnage code (30 = 2.5 ton, 36 = 3, 42 = 3.5, 48 = 4, 60 = 5, 66 = 5.5 ton airflow) + 3-digit input in thousand BTU/h (080 = 80,000) + motor letter (S/E/M/V/C) + 2-digit cabinet width code (14/17/21/24) + revision characters.

How it connects to the filter: Width code selects the filter table row.

Where this comes from: Bryant 912SC Product Data PDS912SC-03 p2 model table and 986TB Product Data PDS986TB-02 p2 (H/D/W columns). The tonnage meaning of the first two digits is inferred from those tables' airflow columns, not from a printed nomenclature.

ICP (Heil/Tempstar/Comfortmaker/Arcoaire/KeepRite/AirQuest) families: N9MSE, F9MXE/G9MXE, F9MXT/G9MXT, F9MVE/G9MVE, N8MSN/N8MSL, N8MXL, F8MTL/G8MTL

Example: N9MSE0601714A1

How to read it: 1 = tier (F/G = Mainline, N = Entry). 2 = efficiency (9 = 90+% AFUE; 8 = 80% in the 80% families). 3 = position (M = multiposition). 4 = blower (A modulating ECM, V ECM variable speed, X ECM, S single-stage PSC, T two-stage). 5 = feature (B base, C communicating, E extra AFUE, T two-stage; 80% families use N/L). 6-8 = input in thousand BTU/h. 9-10 = cabinet width (14 = 14-3/16, 17 = 17-1/2, 21 = 21, 24 = 24-1/2 in.). 11-12 = nominal max cooling airflow (08 = 800 ... 22 = 2200 CFM). 13 = sales (major) revision, 14 = engineering (minor) revision.

How it connects to the filter: Width digits 9-10 select the filter table row.

Where this comes from: ICP N9MSE Product Specifications 96-9757 p2 'Model Number Identification Guide'. Applied to 80% families by analogy; checked against each manual's dimension table (width code matched casing width in every case).
